look a bit droopy? Some of your trees and shrubbery have
“white stuff” on the bottom of the leaves? Your tomato
plants just aren’t producing? The plants you put in last
year didn’t come back this year? Your African violets are
shriveling away? Bring your “sick” plants to Major
Hillard Library and let “Dr. Mike” diagnose your plant
problems and tell you how to make your plants healthy again.
Mike Andruczyk, Agricultural Extension Service Agent, will
be at Major Hillard Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy,
on Monday, October 20, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. to diagnose
your plant problems. This program is free and open to the

Annual Plant Swap

October 4, 2008, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
The Chesapeake Master
Gardeners will sponsor a Plant Swap at the Major Hillard
Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy, N.
Do the plants in your yard need dividing? Have you run
out of friends and family to give them to? Then come
participate in our plant swap. Just transplant each
divided perennial into a 3” or larger pot and label it
with the name of the plant and instructions on how to care
for it. Then trade your plant for another plant of
similar quality with other gardeners. Only
disease-free, freshly potted plants will be accepted for
swapping; a maximum of 10 plants of one type per person.
Master Gardeners will be available on site to answer your
gardening questions.
The Major Hillard Library is located on Old George
Washington Highway near the Deep Creek Post Office.

Keynote speaker, Lynden Miller,
director of The Conservatory Garden in New York’s Central Park,
will speak about garden design with an emphasis on plants that can
be used to soften and civilize city life and change the way people
behave and treat each other. Applying Lynden’s
philosophy on a smaller scale, other symposium speakers, including
horticulturist, author, lecturer and radio personality Andre
Viette, and, Bob Lyons, director of
graduate programs at Longwood Gardens, will discuss how to create
gardens that “nourish the soul”. Topics of discussion
will include seasonal planting, mixed borders, and effective
combinations of plants.

Garden Week in Virginia
April
19 - 27, 2008
This
spring, visitors will step through the gates of more than 250 of
Virginia’s most beautiful gardens, homes and historic landmarks
during “America’s Largest Open House,” April 19-27, 2008.
Three dozen Historic Garden Week tours present a rich mosaic of
some of the country’s finest properties at the peak of
Virginia’s springtime color. Sponsored by The Garden Club of
Virginia, local events are scheduled from the Atlantic Ocean to
the Allegheny Mountains and will span the centuries from the early
17th through the early 21st.

Exhibitors enter blooms between
8:00-10:00 a.m. Novice growers are also encouraged to enter one or
more blooms. There is a novice award. You do not have to be a
Virginia Camellia Society member to enter blooms in this show.
Judging begins about 10:30 a.m. when all blooms are placed. The
show opens to the public after judging is completed (usually about
12:00 Noon.)
Camellia plant sales will BEGIN
at 10:00 a.m. - NOT before. Plant sales will END when all plants
are sold or at 4:00 p.m. Many varieties for sale this year-same
low prices for beautiful 3 gallon plants, $25; 1 gallon plants,
$12.
Attendance at the show and plant
sale is free and open to the public.

Hydroponic Gardening
& Chesapeake Master Gardener Monthly Meeting

On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., the Major Hillard Library with the Chesapeake Extension Services will co-sponsor a gardening lecture entitled, Hydroponic Gardening, at the Major Hillard Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy, N. Mike Huff will be the guest speaker. The program should last around 45 minutes with a Question and Answer session.
Are you intrigued by the thought of soil-less gardening? Do you want to produce greater plant yield in a less amount of time? Does the prospect of fewer bug infestations, funguses, or diseases entice your interest? If these points have caught your attention, then attend this program to learn more about hydroponic gardening. During the program, the speaker will cover the following points: what is hydroponic gardening, how to set up a home hydroponic system, what you can grow easily in your home hydroponic system vs. what it more difficult to grow, common problems, basic costs vs. growing conventionally, and organic hydroponics.
